Newspaper

Currently (2009) Central Square does not have a newspaper located within the village. The Citizen Outlet closed its local office in about August 2007. However, we still have two primary newspapers that service our citizens; Syracuse Post Standard and The Citizen Outlet.

Brief Newspaper History: The first newspaper, called The New Era came out in 1877.  Then B. M. Hicks edited and published the Central Square Review.  It was a large four page that was published as early as 1890.  The Central Square News was begun October 1, 1892.   It was published weekly for many years (into about the 1940's) by William H. Vrooman and later Harold D. Vrooman.  In 1945 there was the Central Square Times.  R. Austin Backus published The Central Square Citizen 1951-1956.  The name changed to The Central Square Citizen, Fort Brewerton Outlet from July 12, 1956-February 14, 1957, then to The Central Square Citizen 1957-1961 published by Everet V. Backus.  From October 12, 1961-March 1, 1962 the paper ran as The Central Square Citizen-Brewerton Outlet and then in 1962 (to the present 2009) Everet V. Backus has published a paper covering our local stories know as The Citizen Outlet.
